TL;DR

Lawyer and attorney suspensions are among the most common high-value cases in my 650+ caseload because of three structural issues: the practice's DBA name rarely matches the attorney's state bar registration, multiple attorneys share one office address creating duplicate-profile flags, and "practice area" names tempt keyword stuffing ("Best Personal Injury Lawyer Chicago"). Google's guidelines (support.google.com/business/answer/3038177) treat these as deceptive content. To recover, align the GBP name with signage and state bar records, consolidate duplicate attorney profiles, then file with Google's four accepted evidence types (support.google.com/business/answer/4569145): bar license, certificate of good standing, malpractice policy, IOLTA statement, and office photos.

Updated April 2026: Law firm suspensions are up in 2026 following Google's enforcement of the lawyer-specific category rules. Solo practitioners and multi-partner firms face different verification requirements.

Why Law Firm GBP Suspensions Are Different

Law firm GBP suspension most commonly results from practice-area keyword stuffing in the business name, virtual office addresses, or attorney duplicate listings — violations specific to the legal profession. Google applies stricter verification to attorneys because legal services is one of the most spam-affected categories on Maps. Law firms represent approximately 15% of GBP suspension cases I handle.

Law firms lose more potential clients per suspension day than almost any other business I work with. Personal injury partners I've worked with have estimated tens of thousands of dollars per week in missed fee revenue while offline — calculated against their own reported case-value averages and call volume, not an industry survey. Family law practices lose consultations that each represent several thousand dollars in downstream billing. The stakes are high, and yet attorneys often make the same preventable mistakes that trigger suspensions. For a full walk-through of one such recovery see the Fletcher Law recovery case study.

After handling dozens of law firm reinstatement cases, I've identified a clear pattern: the violations that affect attorneys are almost always tied to three things — business name formatting, office address legitimacy, and aggressive review solicitation. This guide covers all three, plus the documentation and appeal process that gets law firms reinstated.

Key Stats: Law Firm GBP Suspensions

  • ~15% (in my caseload): share of GBP suspension cases I handle that are law firms or solo attorneys — one of the highest rates of any professional service category I see.
  • ~45% (in my caseload): share of law firm suspensions caused by virtual office or unverifiable address issues — legal services is one of the categories Sterling Sky and Near Media have repeatedly flagged as spam-affected.
  • ~65% first-appeal reinstatement (in my caseload): for law firm appeals that pair Google's four accepted evidence types (business registration, license, tax certificate, utility bill) with the supplementary bar license + physical office lease.

Two Google Rules Before You Appeal

Two rules from Google's official reinstatement page (support.google.com/business/answer/4569145) that cost firms time when missed:

  • Evidence-form prep. Assemble everything before you open the evidence form. The form may time out after a period of inactivity, but Google does not publish a 60-minute deadline — have files ready and submit in one focused sitting.
  • Do not create a duplicate profile while the appeal is pending. For law firms this includes creating a second firm profile at the same address or spinning up individual-attorney profiles as a workaround. Google's rule is explicit: no new Business Profile for the same business while the existing one is under review.

Why Law Firm GBPs Get Suspended: Industry-Specific Triggers

  • Practice area keyword stuffing: "Smith Personal Injury Car Accident Wrongful Death Lawyers" instead of the registered "Smith & Associates Law Group LLC." Google flags service descriptors in the name field as deceptive content.
  • Virtual office or shared address: Many attorneys rent virtual office space to establish a presence in a target city. Google has cracked down heavily on virtual office addresses, particularly in legal services where fake location spam is common.
  • Shared address with other firms: Law firms in co-working spaces or shared office buildings often share a suite number with other firms. When multiple law firms list the same address, Google may suspend all of them pending verification — a wrong-address style suspension.
  • Multiple city location spam: Creating separate GBP listings for cities where you practice but don't have a physical office is explicitly against Google's guidelines. I see this frequently with personal injury firms trying to target multiple markets — see also the SAB suspension patterns.
  • Review gating: Sending clients a link that asks "How was your experience?" and only directing positive responses to Google is review gating — a direct violation of both Google's terms and FTC guidelines that often leads to a fake-reviews suspension.
  • Name mismatch against your legal filing: If your state business registration is filed as "Smith Law Firm PLLC" but your GBP shows "Smith Injury Attorneys," the discrepancy between your GBP name and your registered legal name is a common flag pattern — equivalent to many post-edit suspensions. Align GBP to the filing name.
  • Duplicate firm profiles for the same entity: Creating multiple GBP listings for the same firm at the same address — or creating a second listing for a specific practice area — creates duplicate signals. (Google does allow individual public-facing practitioners their own profile under their personal name per representation guidelines. See FAQ below.)
Top 7 Triggers Behind Law Firm GBP Suspensions
The industry-specific patterns Google flags on legal practices.
Practice Area Stuffing
Practice areas stuffed into the registered firm name
Virtual Office Address
Mailbox-only or unstaffed address used as the firm location
Shared Suite Conflict
Multiple firms list the exact same suite address
Multi-City Location Spam
Profiles created in cities where the firm has no physical office
Review Gating
Routing only positive client feedback to Google
Name Filing Mismatch
GBP firm name differs from state bar registration filing
Duplicate Firm Profiles

Common Violations in Legal Industry GBP Profiles

The single most common violation I see in law firm suspensions is an address that Google cannot verify as a genuine, staffed office. Legal services is one of the most heavily spam-affected categories on Google Maps. Fraudulent law firm listings are a known problem, so Google applies stricter verification standards to attorneys than to most other professions.

  • Virtual office address: If your suite is a registered agent service, a UPS Store, or a shared reception desk where you're not physically present during business hours, Google's representation guidelines do not accept it as a verifiable location.
  • Business name with practice areas: Acceptable — "Johnson Law Group." Not acceptable — "Johnson Personal Injury & DUI Defense Attorneys Houston."
  • Service area abuse: Listing 20 cities as your service area when you physically operate from one office creates spam signals.
  • Multiple firm listings at one address: One GBP per firm per physical office location. A second profile for the same firm under a different practice-area name at the same address will be merged or suspended. (Individual public-facing partners may have their own practitioner profile — see FAQ.)

Documentation for Law Firm Reinstatement

Per Google's official reinstatement page, the only document types Google formally accepts as evidence are four categories: business registration, business license, tax certificate, and utility bill. Bar licenses, malpractice insurance, and office photos are supplementary supporting evidence — I include them because they help in my caseload, but they are not Google requirements.

DocumentWhat to provideStatus
Business registrationCertificate of formation for your LLC, PC, or PLLC showing the registered firm name and registered address.Required
Business licenseAny applicable state or municipal business license for operating a law firm entity.Required
Tax certificateEIN letter, state sales/franchise tax certificate, or the most recent tax filing tied to the firm entity.Required

Step-by-Step Recovery Process for Law Firms

Law Firm GBP Recovery Process
Step-by-step reinstatement workflow for suspended attorney listings.
Step 1
Determine Suspension Type
Diagnose hard vs. soft suspension based on Google's notifications.
Step 2
Fix Profile Violations
Address issues like keyword stuffing, address verification, or deceptive content.
Step 3
Gather Legal Documents
Collect official documents verifying your law firm's existence and location.
Step 4
Write Appeal
Craft a compelling, well-reasoned appeal addressing Google's concerns.
Step 5
Submit & Monitor
Submit the reinstatement request and track its progress through Google's review pipeline.
Step 6
Reinstate Listing
Successfully regain profile access and visibility, allowing clients to find your firm.

Step 1: Determine the Suspension Type

A hard suspension (profile completely removed) vs. a soft suspension (profile shows as "pending verification") requires different approaches. Review our hard vs. soft suspension guide to determine what you're dealing with. If Google gave no explanation, work through the no-reason diagnostic guide. Most law firm suspensions caused by address issues result in a hard suspension.

Step 2: Fix Your Profile Before Appealing

Change your business name to match your state business registration exactly. Remove any city names, practice areas, or superlatives. If your office is a virtual address, you have two options: establish a verifiable physical office or convert your listing to a Service Area Business with no displayed address (using named cities, counties, or postal codes — Google no longer accepts radius-based service areas). If you have duplicate firm profiles for the same firm at one address, keep one firm profile and remove the rest — individual public-facing partners can keep their own practitioner profile under their personal name.

Step 3: Build Your Documentation Package

Compile your bar license, firm registration, office lease, and photos. Create a cover document that lists each attached file and explains what it demonstrates. Law firm reviewers appreciate organized submissions because they confirm professionalism.

Step 4: Write Your Appeal

Acknowledge the specific issue directly. State that you are a licensed attorney in good standing with your state bar. Describe the corrections you've made. Attorneys who write their own appeals sometimes over-argue — keep it factual and brief. Reference the appeal template and the reinstatement letter examples for the correct structure.

Step 5: Submit and Monitor

Submit through the GBP reinstatement form with all documents attached. When the evidence form opens, attach everything in one focused sitting — the form may time out after inactivity, but Google does not publish a 60-minute deadline. Prep files first. Do not create a new firm profile while this appeal is pending. For law firms with address disputes, Google sometimes assigns video verification to confirm the physical office — you cannot request it proactively; respond promptly if assigned. If the first appeal is denied, move to the denied-appeal escalation playbook.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I list my law firm at a virtual office address on Google?
Generally, no. Google requires business locations to be staffed during listed business hours. Virtual offices where you have a registered address but no physical staff presence are not accepted. If you use a virtual office, you have two options: establish genuine office hours at that location (where a receptionist or attorney is physically present) or list as a Service Area Business with no address displayed.
My firm has offices in multiple cities. Do I need a separate GBP for each?
Yes, but only for offices where attorneys or staff are physically present. Each physical office location should have its own GBP listing. You cannot create GBP listings for cities where you market but don't have a staffed office — this violates Google's guidelines and is one of the most common causes of law firm suspensions.
How long does it take to reinstate a suspended law firm GBP?
With proper documentation, most law firm reinstatements take 5–14 days. Cases involving virtual office disputes or multiple suspended listings can take 3-6 weeks. Address-related suspensions sometimes require video verification, which can extend the process but often results in a stronger, more stable reinstatement.
Individual attorneys at my firm all created separate GBP listings. What should I do?
It depends on who is a public-facing attorney. Google's representation guidelines (support.google.com/business/answer/3038177) allow individual public-facing practitioners — a partner who takes clients under their own name — to have their own practitioner profile at the firm's address, alongside a single firm profile. What violates policy is creating multiple profiles for the same firm entity (same services, same phone, same hours) or creating practitioner profiles for staff who are not public-facing (paralegals, associates who don't intake clients). The cleanup: one profile for the firm itself, plus optional practitioner profiles only for true public-facing partners (each with their own name, personal categories, and ideally a distinct phone line). Remove any extras. Do it carefully — removing profiles incorrectly can affect review history.
Can I use my home address for my law firm GBP if I work from home?
Yes, but only if you are licensed to operate a law practice from that address and you physically meet clients there. You can also list as a Service Area Business and hide your home address while still showing your service areas. Most attorneys in home offices choose the SAB option for privacy.
